Gabriel Ayala

"Hola! I'm Gabriel Antonio Ayala Tarazona and I was born in Chacas, Ancash Huaraz on June 17, 1972. When I was a boy, I lived with my parents, surrounded by nature and breathing the pure country air. Although my parents weren't artisans, they had a great appreciation for this kind of art. My father was a farmer and my mother looked after the home. I studied in a technical school where I learned the principles of art. I perfected my skills in the Instituto Superior Tecnológico de Tallado Don Bosco, where my artistic formation was begun.

"When I was very young, I especially liked the world of art. I admired and respected it very much. Ever since, I dreamed of becoming an artist. I wanted it so much that I enrolled in the Don Bosco school where I learned everything I always wanted to know.

"Our economic situation was limited. It was especially difficult in the Peruvian sierra. I remember crafting little figurines of clay with the hope of one day creating true works of art. I also carved blocks of wood and this filled me with happiness.

"But I also worked as a young boy in order to help my family and to get ahead in the very difficult situation that we were going through. Today I am extremely happy with what I do and the works I make with my hands.

"I'd describe my art as meaning everything to me. I like to admire the fine workmanship and perfect finishing that keep me striving harder each day. At first, I was motivated by financial necessity but today I am fueled by the desire to make this wonderful art known. I try to transmit a love of my work and the ability of the people in the Peruvian Andes.

"For me, art is a way of life, and I consider 'art' to be anything done with love and patience. I bring my works to life with dedication and devotion.

"My greatest challenges in life have been to face and withstand sacrifices more than anything, as in our reality, art has suffered much bad treatment and lack of consideration.

"To all my Novica friends, I first want to thank you for your purchases, as this helps so many people like me. In this way, you give us opportunities through our art so that we can progress in life and express ourselves with hands full of love. Your patronage is also an incentive for the young people in the sierra, as it shows them that it is worth the effort to keep struggling and take our marvelous art to the world."
